You want to pick a category or niche first and here is why. To attract people who are going to click on your affiliate links you are going to post lots of content online at sites that let you create free websites and free blogs. By focusing on a specific product first instead of a niche you severely limit your ability to grow as an beginner affiliate and your income becomes tied to a single product. BAD IDEA!
If you make the mistake of focusing on a specific product first, imagine you spend the next few months posting tons of blog posts and weg pages with your affiliate link for this product. You start seeing sales and get all excited.
This happened to me and that was one of my first hard lessons in affiliate marketing.
A product called Spybubble was one of the biggest affiliate products online. After five years of hundreds of affiliates promoting their product, one day they sent all affiliates an email saying they have stopped their affiliate program and referral commissions will no longer be paid out. Hundreds of pages I had posted on websites and blog posts were in complete vain. True, I had earn the affiliate commissions up to that point but there would be no more recurring, ongoing commissions from my efforts.
In fact there are real scum bag companies out that create an affiliate program just to get lots of other people making web pages and blog posts that point back to their website. They let the program run for a few years so as to build up a huge number of page rank building backlinks. Once all the affiliates have done the hard work the company drops them like a hot potato.
The simple way to avoid this is:
This approach is going to save you a lot of headaches and heartburn in the long run.
The two biggest online retailers are Ebay and Amazon. Both of these sites have a category search. Neither of these sites is going to list a category if that category was not profitable and producing lots of sales.
If you click on any of the categories you will be taken to a page of products for sale in that category. You will also see more subcategories on the left hand side. This will further give you ideas if your really wanted to narrow down and target a specific niche. Any of the categories and/or sub categories are niches that can make you money as a new affiliate marketer.
Just like Ebay, if you click on any of the categories you will be taken to a page of products for sale in that category. You will also see more subcategories on the left hand side. Any of the categories and/or sub categories contained within Amazon category search are niches that can make you great money as a new affiliate marketer.
The final step in deciding on a niche market to target is MAKE SURE there an plenty of products (or at least a few) that you can sell in that niche. There are several ways to do this.
Affiliate Aggregate Search Sites:
Use either of the following two affiliate aggregate search sites simply to see the volume of affiliate products available in your chosen niche. As a beginning affiliate you want to concentrate on products found within the following larger affiliate networks below (Clickbank, Commission Junction, Avangate, Shareasale, Linkshare) because a lot of the affiliate networks contained within OfferVault and oDigger are real crappy, spammy products. As a beginner affiliate you are trying to build a reputation as being an expert in your chosen field and offering spammy garbage products on your website will do nothing for your reputation.
Larger Affiliate Networks:
Most of the products you will find at the following larger affiliate networks are reputable and good quality. Join Clickbank first. You will automatically be approved for any and all products within the network. The others (Commission Junction, Avangate, Shareasale, Linkshare) you have to be approved for each product. Nothing wrong with that it's just that since you are new to affiliate marketing Clickbank is the easiest and fastest one to work with right away. Once you have a few months experience under your belt and have gotten your feet wet then start finding products within your niche for the other affiliate networks as well.
A visit to the OfferVault or oDigger website is the fastest way to get a good idea how lucrative a niche will be. Enter in a niche in the search box and notice the number of affiliate programs OfferVault returns from the search. If a lot of different affiliate programs pop up then that should be a good final test to indicate you have chosen a popular niche to target as a new aspiring affiliate marketer.
Suggestion/Warning: avoid becoming an affiliate for any single one company that is not within one of the larger affiliate networks listed above because any single company or website running an affiliate program can easily cheat you out of sales and commissions because they have control of the tracking code that tracks your clicks and sales. The larger affiliate networks above are completely independant of any one company and their sole job is to manage and track all sales and commissions so you can trust them.
Below is a checklist or action plan. Nothing happens until you take action. Complete each of the items below starting with the first. Check them off as you complete them.
Congratulations!! you now know what you are going to be an official expert about on the web!! The fact you have proceeded this far in the tutorial on affiliate marketing for beginnners means you are a doer and not a talker and I can guarantee you will be successful. Move on to the next lessson how to get a domain name.
